On the eve of Rosh Hashanah all the jews are praying and fasting, except for Elie. He has lost all faith in God and wont pray. He curses the lord and he cant understand why God has abandoned them but in the end, he decides to pray. Elie and his father survive another selection of people who are not able to work and they are placed in a construction unit. Elie later gets his foot infected and has to get surgery. Elie finally has a nice matress again and he has forgotten what it felt like. The doctor told Elie that he would be fine in a couple of weeks.
There is news that the Russian army is advancing and the Germans make the jews leave the camp. The jews in the hospital are aloud to stay, but Elie goes becuase he wants to stay with his father. They have to march through the snow, and Elies foot is bleeding bad but he stills goes on. The jews have no clue where they are going, but it wont be any better than the place before. Elie father is in a bad state and he fears how much longer he will hold on.
If I was Elie, it would be hard for me to pray to. I would feel like God has left me to. Also, I cant imagine what its like thinking that your father is going to die and seeing him look like that. Elie is a strong person and i wouldnt be able to do half the things that he did.
