Elie and his father are on a train and are headed to a new camp. Everytime the train stops, more dead bodies are thrown off the train and it smells horrible. Two men come to get Elies father who is very sick, but Elie awakes him to show the guards that he is still alive. People threw bread into the cars and the people would jump on each other and even kill each other just for a few crumbs of bread to survive. One boy even killed his own father before being killed himself. This shows you how bad the conditions were and makes you understand how awful things were for these people.
Later, they finally reach Buchenwald, and out of the hundred of people on the train, only around a dozen manage to survive. On the way to the camp, they face horible weather conditions, and Elie's father has a hard time keeping up. Elie later starts seeing his dad as dead wait and he thinks he would have a better chance of surviving without him. Although Elie feels this way, he cant just leave his father to die, so he tries to get two doctors to help him, but they cant. He tries to get water, but he is hit in the head, but Elie doses off to sleep because he is so tired. When elie awakes the next morning, his father is missing, and Elie knows he is dead. Elie does not even weep because he is too tired physically and emotionally. This is so shocking that his father just died and he doesnt even feel sorrow or crie. The camp, which was supposed to evacuated was attacked by americans and all the jews were set free. Elies gets sick with food poisoning, and has to be hospitalized. He awakes and for the first time since the ghettos, sees himself and the mirror and he thinks he looks like a living corpes.
